| Frequently Asked Questions | ||
| What is an NVQ? | ||
|
NVQ stands for National Vocational Qualification. It is a 'competence-based' qualification: this means you learn practical,
work-related tasks designed to help you develop the skills and knowledge to do a job effectively. NVQs are based on national standards for various occupations. The standards say what a competent person in a job could be expected to do. As you progress through the course, you compare your skills and knowledge with these standards as you learn, so you can see what you need to do to meet them. Taking an NVQ could be appropriate if you already have skills and want to improve them, or if you are starting from scratch.
| How does it work? | ||
|
NVQs are assessed on practical assignments and a portfolio of evidence. Normally, a qualified assessor will observe you and
question you about the real work you carry out in the workplace (or a realistic working environment). They will test your
knowledge and understanding as well as your actual performance. Your assessor will 'sign-off' individual units within the NVQ when you have reached the required standard.
| How long does an NVQ take to complete? | ||
|
There is no set time to complete an NVQ as they vary widely in content and size.
The length of time taken will depend on the ability of the individual learner and the employer's requirements. An NVQ will usually take anything from 6 to 18 months, so a large degree of commitment on your part is necessary to see it through. We at Expedient will give you the support and guidance to complete your qualification in a timescale which suits you.
| What are the different NVQ levels? | ||
|
Level 2 - Equivalent to 5 GCSE's A* - C Competence that involves the application of knowledge in a significant range of varied work activities, performed in a variety of contexts. Collaboration with others, perhaps through membership of a work group or team, is often a requirement. Level 3 - Equivalent to 2 A Levels Competence that involves the application of knowledge in a broad range of varied work activities performed in a wide variety of contexts, most of which are complex and non-routine. There is considerable responsibility and autonomy and control or guidance of others is often required.
